Abhishek Sharma has been in red-hot form in the ongoing Asia Cup having smacked over 300 runs at a blistering pace.

Sri Lanka head coach Sanath Jayasuriya praised India’s opener Abhishek Sharma for his fearless batting, attributing his consistent performance in the ongoing Asia Cup to the team management’s support, which has allowed him to play his natural game.

The 25-year-old Indian opener scored his third consecutive half-century as India triumphed over Sri Lanka in the Super Over on Friday.

“He (Abhishek) is playing his natural game and they (team management) have encouraged him to play his natural game,” said the Sri Lankan legend when asked if he saw similarities between a young Jayasuriya and Abhishek during the post-match interaction.

“That’s crucial because if someone is playing his natural game, we need to encourage him to continue doing so.”

After a relatively quiet group stage, Abhishek has scored 74 (against Pakistan), 75 (against Bangladesh), and 61 (against Sri Lanka), showcasing his aggressive style of cricket.

“Whenever he wants to slow down a bit, he knows how to do that now. So, after six overs (of powerplay) if he wants to bat for a longer period, he is doing that. Day by day he is scoring more runs and batting really well.”

Jayasuriya added that the complete backing of Indian coaches has helped Abhishek fully reveal his batting potential at the top.

“I think the positive aspect is the coaching staff has given him the freedom to play his natural game. That’s the key.”

Abhishek has been in prime form in the continental tournament having scored 309 runs from six innings at a strike rate of 204.64. India were given an injury scare during their hard-fought triumph with Abhishek suffering cramps.

However, bowling coach Morne Morkel has allayed fears over the 25-year-old’s fitness.

India will now take on Pakistan in the final of the Asia Cup aiming for a hat-trick of wins having earlier beaten them once each in the group and Super Four stages.
