Suryakumar Yadav hails India’s character in Super 4 clash vs Sri Lanka, praising Arshdeep Singh and key batting from Abhishek Sharma.
India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has said that his message to his team was to play the final Super 4 game against Sri Lanka as a semifinal, but the ebbs and flows of the game did make him feel like it was the summit showdown, adding that despite being in the finals already, plans had to be executed to the ‘T’.
Needing 12 off the last over from Harshit Rana and three off the final delivery, Dasun Shanaka could manage only two as the game went into a Super Over.
Star India pacer Arshdeep Singh delivered a brilliant 19th over in regulation play and then picked up two wickets in the Super Over, limiting Sri Lanka to just two runs, chased down by Suryakumar on the first ball.
“It felt like a final (laughs). The boys showed a lot of character after the first half in the second innings. Told them to play this like a semi-final. Get everyone close in, have good energy and then let’s see what happens,” Suryakumar said while speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony.
“Arshdeep has been in that situation a lot of times and he has delivered for us. I only told him to back your own plans and not to think about anything. We are already in the finals, but have your own plans and execute them,” Suryakumar added.
Suryakumar praised his side’s batting, which propelled India to 202/5 after being put in. Key contributions came from Abhishek Sharma (61), Tilak Varma (49*) and Sanju Samson (39).
“To have that start and then someone like Sanju and Tilak batting that way and taking the tempo ahead from where Abhishek left (cannot say from where I left it). Sanju not opening, going down the order, taking responsibility and Tilak taking confidence and responsibility, that was good to see,” Suryakumar said.
