Outside of India vs Pakistan, the Ashes series played between England and Australia is regarded as one of the most legendary cricketing rivalry in the sport. England seamer Stuart Broad found this out first hand in the 2013/14 series when he came across a shirt branded with a choice expletive regarding him, as per a story by Joe Root.
“What an Ashes competitor. Look at his record against Australia. He did some very special things on the field. And when in 2013/14, he was the most hated man in the world. I was sure, it was in Melbourne. I think we were walking towards a park. We were going for lunch or something. And someone stopped him and said, ‘excuse me, do you the park is and he went, ‘I am pretty sure it’s over there’. And this guy is wearing a ‘Stuart Broad is a s**t bloke’ t-shirt. And he has got no idea that he is talking to Stuart Broad. It was that level of hatred towards him on that tour. Like people who don’t know anything about cricket or who he is are still wearing the merchandise. So he was actually quite impressed and quite proud of that,” Root said in the Barmy Army TV YouTube channel.
Broad who retired in 2023 after playing the 5th Test of that year’s Ashes, made his debut for the England Test side in December 2007 and have won 167 caps. He also passed the 600-wickets milestone for his country during that Ashes. He sits at fifth on the all-time list of wicket-takers, and is one of only two fast bowlers to take over 600 wickets, alongside longtime bowling partner Jimmy Anderson. The right-arm seamer also played in 121 one-day internationals and 56 international T20 games.

Meanwhile, a few days earlier, the England Cricket Board (ECB) announced a 16-player English squad for the 2025 Ashes series against Australia Down Under. Ben Stokes, who missed the fifth and final Test against India in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy due to a shoulder injury, returned to the thick of things as he will lead the England team, who are eying their first Ashes series win since 2015.
The squad also saw a change in the leadership group as Harry Brook has been appointed as the deputy of Stokes for the Australia tour, replacing the otherwise in-charge Ollie Pope.
