India defeated Pakistan by 5 wickets in the Asia Cup 2025 final but refused the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, celebrating with a mock ceremony led by Suryakumar Yadav.
Drama continued till the very end of the Asia Cup 2025 as India refused to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief. India defeated Pakistan by 5 wickets in the grand finale of the continental championship but reportedly, didn’t get the trophy following their informal protest. The matter escalated when the organisers took the trophy away from the post-match presentation, forcing India to celebrate without it.
A clarity on the entire chain of events is still awaited, but the pictures from the venue suggests that the champions were denied the trophy after their refusal. However, it didn’t stop Suryakumar Yadav & Co to celebrate their historic win.
Several videos surfaced on social media that shows Suryakumar Yadav recreating Rohit Sharma’s act of receiving the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados – a slow-motion walk towards the podium, laying his hands in the trophy and celebrating with loud cheers.
As Naqvi took the dais, he was told India wouldn’t accept the trophy if he presented it. The trophy was taken inside the dressing room. According to PTI, India were willing to accept the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni, but Naqvi did not permit it. The incident marked an unusual and tense moment in cricket history.
India thump Pakistan to win Asia Cup
Chasing 147, India suffered a top-order collapse at 20 for three, with Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shubman Gill falling cheaply. But Tilak Varma displayed maturity beyond his years, anchoring the chase with an unbeaten 69 off 53 balls. He found support from Sanju Samson (24) and Shivam Dube (33 off 21).
Earlier, Pakistan posted 146 after a promising 84-run opening stand between Sahibzada Farhan (57) and Fakhar Zaman (46). However, the middle order collapsed spectacularly once Kuldeep Yadav (4/30) struck, ably supported by Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel. From 113 for one, Pakistan lost nine wickets for just 33 runs.
