India has dominated the Asia Cup, winning nine titles across ODI and T20I formats, including the 2025 edition in UAE where they beat Pakistan thrice and remained unbeaten.

The Asia Cup, which began in 1984 as a three-team tournament, has since evolved into a multi-national competition featuring Asia’s top teams. India stands as the most successful team, having secured nine titles in the years 1984, 1988, 1990-91, 1995, 2010, 2016, 2018, and 2023.

India has won the Asia Cup in the ODI format on seven occasions and twice in the T20I format.

1984:

The inaugural Asia Cup, held in Sharjah, UAE, from April 6 to 13, marked the beginning of the continental championship. India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka participated in a round-robin format. India emerged victorious, winning both their matches. Sri Lanka secured the second position, while Pakistan ended the tournament without a single win. Notably, this edition witnessed the first-ever One Day International (ODI) match played at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium, which later became one of cricket’s iconic venues.

1988:

The 1988 Asia Cup was held in Bangladesh, expanding the tournament to four teams, including the hosts. The tournament, played from October 26 to November 4, also marked the first List A games in Bangladesh. Following a round-robin format, India and Sri Lanka advanced to the final. India clinched their second title by defeating Sri Lanka by six wickets, further solidifying their dominance in Asian cricket.

1990-91:

The 1990-91 Asia Cup, held in India from December 25 to January 4, saw India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh contest the tournament due to political tensions preventing Pakistan’s participation. The round-robin format led to India and Sri Lanka reaching the final, where India clinched their second consecutive and third overall title with a commanding seven-wicket victory.

2010:

The 2010 Asia Cup, played in Sri Lanka from June 15 to 24, featured the four Test-playing nations: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. India emerged victorious in the final, defeating Sri Lanka by 81 runs to secure a record fifth title. Their consistent performances throughout the tournament showcased their prowess in the 50-over format.

2016:

The 2016 Asia Cup, held in Bangladesh from February 24 to March 6, marked a significant moment in the tournament’s history as it introduced the Twenty20 International format for the first time. The tournament featured India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the United Arab Emirates, who qualified through a preliminary round. India remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and defeated their hosts, Bangladesh, by eight wickets in the final to secure their sixth title.

2018:

The 2018 Asia Cup returned to the United Arab Emirates in September, with India aiming to defend their crown. In a thrilling final, India triumphed over Bangladesh by three wickets, successfully retaining their title and securing their seventh championship win. This victory further solidified India’s dominance in the tournament.

2023:

The 2023 Asia Cup was a historic event as it marked the first time the tournament was held across two countries, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, from August 30 to September 17. Six teams participated, including Nepal, who qualified through the ACC Premier Cup. Despite the hybrid model of hosting, India chose to play all its matches in Sri Lanka, refusing to travel to Pakistan. India’s all-round performance was exceptional, and they went on to defeat Sri Lanka in the final.

2025:

The 2025 Men’s Asia Cup was the 17th edition of the Asia Cup and was held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from 9 to 28 September 2025. It was the third edition in the T20I format as India clinched their ninth continental title, beating Pakistan thrice, including in the final by five wickets, to remain unbeaten throughout the tournament.
