India face off against Sri Lanka in their ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 opening game at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on September 30.
India and Sri Lanka collide for victory and early momentum at the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 opener on Tuesday, September 30. Harmanpreet Kaur’s rising Indian side face off against Chamari Athapaththu’s solid Lankan outfit at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati to kickstart what could be a game-transforming World Cup campaign for India.
After their leap into becoming one of the top teams in world cricket, India has a great opportunity to claim the nation’s maiden women’s World Cup title. India nearly pulled off the ultimate triumph in the 2017 edition itself, when their inspiring run towards the final at Lord’s ended with a painstaking defeat to hosts England.
Eight years later, an exuberant and talented Indian side under Harmanpreet’s strong leadership has the chance to go one step further and give women’s cricket in India its crown jewel moment, bagging the elusive silverware.
First up in their way is the team from the Island Nation, whom they’ve dominated in the past. The Indian women’s team has defeated the Lankans 31 times in the two teams’ 35 previous 50-over encounters.
Sri Lanka, however, would take a lot of belief from their surprising win against India earlier in the year, when they overcame the regional giants by 3 wickets in Colombo during a tri-series, including South Africa.
During that game, Harshitha Samarawickrama and Nilakshika Silva stood up with critical half-centuries in a spirited run-chase and Sri Lanka, for once, rallied without needing their valiant skipper Athapaththu to do the carry job.
They will need a similar effort if they are to challenge an Indian side packed with in-form players like Harmanpreet, Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Harleen Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues and Pratika Rawal.
India vs Sri Lanka Weather Forecast
The weather forecast for the India versus Sri Lanka ICC Women’s World Cup opening game in Guwahati is cricket-friendly, with no rain expected during the contest on a mostly sunny day. Expect temperatures to range from a low of 27 Degrees Celsius to a high of 34 Degrees Celsius.
Humidity is expected to nudge close to 75 per cent amidst an insignificant wind speed of around 4 km/hour. Both teams will be hoping to quickly adjust to the challenging weather in what has been a hot and humid September in India.
