PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, also Pakistan’s Interior Minister, received flak for walking away with the Asia Cup trophy after India defeated Pakistan in the final.

The thrilling finale of the Asia Cup between India and Pakistan was overshadowed by drama as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi walked away from the Dubai stadium with the trophy and medals meant for Team India after the Men in Blue refused to accept the award from him.

After India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in a high-intensity match, it took over an hour to get the presentation ceremony started as India refused to take the stage in Naqvi’s presence, owing to his provocative posts related to Operation Sindoor.

However, Naqvi, also the Chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), declined to allow anyone else to hand over the trophy instead. As a result, the Asia Cup concluded without Suryakumar Yadav’s side lifting the trophy, despite defeating Pakistan in the final. The trophy and the medals meant for the Men in Blue were also taken away.

Netizens took to social media to brutally troll Naqvi over the act, calling him ‘Trophy Chor’. Users shared AI-generated images of Naqvi running away with the Asia Cup trophy, and a wanted poster of him went viral.

Naqvi’s tantrum could not dull India’s celebrations as Yadav and his teammates celebrated their victory minus the silverware. “We as a team decided not to take the trophy (from Mohsin Naqvi). Nobody told us to do so. But I feel a team that that wins the tournament deserves the trophy,” said the skipper.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has said that the decision to not receive the Asia Cup Trophy wasn’t impulsive and they won’t accept the silverware from a representative of a nation that is waging war against India.

“Let me make this very clear — the Indian team’s decision was deliberate. We had already communicated that we would not accept the Asia Cup trophy from Mr. Mohsin Naqvi, because he is not just the ACC chairman but also a senior leader from Pakistan. For us, it is not possible to take an award from someone who represents a country that is openly hostile and waging war against India,” Saikia told CNN-News18.
