SKY clarified the Asia Cup trophy drama in Dubai, stating India celebrated on the ground as ACC officials took the trophy, denying BCCI or Government involvement in the decision.
Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav cleared the air around all the controversy from last night’s Asia Cup trophy presentation (which didn’t happen), describing the bizarre drama in Dubai last night, after their Asia Cup win against Pakistan.
The Indian skipper summed up the chaotic scenes after India’s Asia Cup triumph over Pakistan, when the players were left waiting nearly an hour without receiving the trophy.
“Trophy leke bhaag gaye woh (They ran away with the trophy). That’s what I saw. I don’t know, some people were making a video of us, but we were standing. We didn’t go inside,” Suryakumar said in an interview with the Indian Express.
According to reports, the Indian team had refused to accept it directly from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president and Pakistan interior minister Mohsin Naqvi, sparking confusion. Eventually, the celebrations went ahead without the silverware.
“We Stayed Out, We Celebrated”
The captain emphasised that his team did not deliberately walk away from the ceremony.
“We didn’t close the door and sit inside the dressing room. We didn’t make anyone wait. We were standing there the whole time. That’s what I saw.”
Instead, the team remained on the ground, soaking in the moment and celebrating individual award winners.
“Everyone was enjoying… clapping, whistling, cheering for Abhishek Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma. That’s the culture of our team.”
Surya Clears the Air on Speculation
Suryakumar also dismissed rumours that the decision to not collect the Asia Cup trophy last night came from the BCCI or the Indian Government, insisting it was taken collectively on the field.
“First of all, let me make it clear, no one from the Government or the BCCI told us anything throughout the tournament. We took that decision on our own.”
He explained that both sets of players were standing on the ground waiting when the situation took a strange turn:
“They (ACC officials) were on stage, we were below. I saw them talking, the crowd started booing, and suddenly someone—one of their representatives—took the trophy and ran away.”
