Deepesh Devendran took 5 wickets as India U19 bowled out Australia U19 for 243 in the first Youth Test at Ian Healy Oval on Tuesday.
Seamer Deepesh Devendran impressed with a five-wicket haul to help India U19 bowl out Australia U19 for 243, taking Day 1 honours in the first Youth Test on Tuesday.
The 17-year-old cricketer from Tamil Nadu finished with remarkable figures of 5/45 in 16.2 overs, while Kishan Kumar contributed effectively with 3/48 in 16 overs, playing an ideal supporting role.
Australia U19 were bowled out in 91.2 overs.
Steven Hogan, batting at number three, top-scored for Australia with a patient 92 off 246 balls, fighting a lone battle as several of his teammates failed to convert their starts.
Zed Hollick was the second-highest scorer for Australia, making 38 off 94 balls.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Australia lost two wickets for 30 runs, with Deepesh and Kishan Kumar making early breakthroughs at the Ian Healy Oval.
Off-spinner Anmoljeet Singh claimed the wicket of captain Will Malajczuk (21), leaving Australia in a precarious position at 78 for three in the first session.
Khilan Patel and Deepesh then dismissed Hollick and wicketkeeper Simon Budge, as Australia stumbled to 167 for five.
The absence of a significant partnership hurt Australia on the opening day, with the Indian bowlers maintaining a disciplined line and length to trouble the home team’s batters.
Before the two-match Youth Test series, the teams competed in a three-game Youth ODI series, which Ayush Mhatre-led India won 3-0.
India won the first Youth ODI by 57 runs, securing the series with victories by 51 and 167-run margins in the subsequent matches.
The second Youth Test will be played from October 7-10 at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
