BCCI forced ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi to congratulate India for Asia Cup win, while demanding the missing trophy’s return.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday registered its protest in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting about chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s actions at the 2025 Asia Cup final in Dubai. CNN-News18 has learned that board members made sure that Naqvi said congratulations to India for winning the title.
India was represented by BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla and former board treasurer Ashish Shelar, who are both members of the ACC board, at the meeting. Together, they demanded that Naqvi immediately submit the Asia Cup trophy to the ACC headquarters in Dubai, while informing the Pakistani side that they are willing to escalate the issue to the International Cricket Council (ICC) level, where a meeting is scheduled for November.
While Shukla is the Executive Board Member for BCCI on the ACC Board, Shelar serves as the BCCI’s Ex-Officio Board Member. It has also been learned that in protest of the ACC chief, Shelar boycotted the meeting midway through.
As reported by this website on Monday, India believes that Naqvi has taken ‘personal possession’ of the Asia Cup trophy after leaving with it midway through the post-match presentation ceremony at the final.
At the event, the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian side, who beat rivals Pakistan by five wickets, had stood their ground, saying that they didn’t want to receive their hard-earned trophy from Naqvi, who’s the interior minister of Pakistan and notorious for his anti-India stance and mocking social media posts.
Naqvi, serving both as ACC chief and Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, insisted he alone would hand over the silverware. India, firmly supported by the BCCI, suggested alternatives such as Emirates Cricket Board president Khalid Al Zarooni or Bangladesh’s Aminul Islam. But Naqvi remained unmoved, rejecting all compromise.
What followed was without precedent — Naqvi and ACC officials left the stage with the trophy still in their possession. The Indian team, undeterred, staged their own celebration, raising imaginary trophies and coffee mugs in front of jubilant supporters.
Other reports have claimed that Naqvi is open to transferring India’s trophy and medals but wants an ‘official function’ to be organised for it first.
