Shahid Afridi asks Mohsin Naqvi to resign either from his PCB chairmanship or the Pakistan Interior Ministry, citing the Men in Green’s need for ‘full attention’.

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has advised Mohsin Naqvi to pick one of his two crucial posts of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman and the Minister of Interior to focus on, and give up on the other. Afridi believes that the decision needs to be made ‘as soon as possible’ because Pakistan cricket needs ‘special attention and time’ which Naqvi isn’t able to provide with his constant juggling of roles.

Naqvi is feeling a bit of pressure at the moment. Since his appointment in 2024 as the chairman, he has overseen Pakistan’s poor performances in home Tests and the 2025 Champions Trophy, while overseeing multiple coaching changes. Mike Hesson’s appointment at the helm has brought better outings, but the Men in Green failed to look the part in the 2025 Asia Cup, winning most matches but losing three against rivals India.

“My request or advice to Naqvi Saheb is that these are two very important posts, and they are big jobs that need time,” Afridi told Telecom Asia Sport. “PCB is totally different from the Interior Ministry, so it must be kept separate. It would be a big decision and should be taken as soon as possible. Pakistan cricket needs special attention and time… Naqvi cannot rely totally on advisers. These advisers are taking him nowhere and he himself says that he doesn’t know much about cricket. He needs to appoint good and competent advisers who know about the game,” Afridi added, referring to the politician’s statement earlier this year.

Currently, Naqvi finds himself in the eye of the storm. Apart from his positions in the ministry as well as at the PCB, he was also appointed the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

His first tournament at the helm, the 2025 Asia Cup, was seeped in controversies and saw Naqvi take partisan stances towards Pakistan in almost every one of them. He became the news in the final by refusing to cede to winners India’s demands that they didn’t want to receive the trophy from him due to his anti-India positions in the past, and instead chose to walk off out of the stadium with ACC officials following him with the trophy.
