Udeshika Prabodhani bowled 10 overs for Sri Lanka in Guwahati and picked up 2 wickets for 55 runs. She is the oldest bowler to take a wicket in a Women’s ODI World Cup match.

Sri Lanka’s Udeshika Prabodhani entered her name in the history books on Tuesday, September 30, by becoming the oldest bowler to take a wicket in the Women’s ODI World Cup. Prabodhani, who is 40 years and 10 days old, bowled 10 overs for the Chamari Athapaththu-led side on Tuesday in Guwahati and picked up two wickets for 55 runs.

She opened her wicket account by dismissing world No. 1 ODI batter Smriti Mandhana. On the second ball of the fourth over of India’s innings, Mandhana was caught by Vishmi Gunaratne. She made 8 runs from 10 balls in the tournament’s opener.

Prabodhani’s second wicket came in the form of Amanjot Kaur. Amanjot, who made 57 runs from 56 balls for Women in Blue and added 103 runs for the seventh wicket with Deepti Sharma (53 runs), was caught by Vishmi Gunaratne again on the third ball of the 44th over.

Apart from Prabodhani, Inoka Ranaweera impressed with her bowling in the match against India. She bowled nine overs and picked up four wickets for 46 runs. The four-wicket haul by Ranaweera helped her become the second oldest cricketer to dismiss four batters in a women’s ODI match.

She is 39 years and 224 days old on Tuesday. Pamela Lavine of the West Indies is the oldest bowler to take a four-fer in women’s ODI. She registered figures of 4/17 at the age of 41 years and 39 days against Sri Lanka at Basseterre in 2010.

Super show by Amanjot

Amanjot displayed character and grit under pressure in her maiden Women’s World Cup match as she teamed up with veteran Deepti to lift India from a precarious position and post a challenging 269 for eight against Sri Lanka.

India were in deep trouble at 124/6, having lost four wickets in two overs, when the 24-year-old from Mohali, Amanjot, walked into the middle. The innings saw multiple rain breaks, reducing the contest to 47 over a side.

Alongside senior partner Deepti Sharma (53 off 53 ), Amanjot (57 off 56) rebuilt the innings with a 103-run partnership off 99 balls.

From the start, Amanjot showed remarkable composure, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries. She also survived three reprieves — dropped on 18, 37, and 50 — as the inexperienced Sri Lankan fielders struggled to hold onto chances.

She brought up her maiden World Cup half-century off just 45 balls, featuring five fours and a towering six, blending aggression with control to keep India afloat.

Senior batter Deepti anchored the other end and completed her 16th WODI fifty in the process.

Sneh Rana also put on a fine cameo of 28 not out from 15 balls with with two fours and two sixes to prop up the total.
