Veteran Indian all-rounder R. Ashwin went unsold at the players’ auction for the 2025 season of the International League T20 (ILT20).
The 38-year-old Tamil Nadu cricketer had entered the auction with a base price of USD 120,000 – the highest in the pool – and was available for the entire season. With three franchises owned by IPL stakeholders in the competition, Ashwin was widely expected to attract bids.
Had he been picked, Ashwin would have joined compatriots Dinesh Karthik (Sharjah Warriorz) and Piyush Chawla (Abu Dhabi Knight Riders) as the only Indians in this year’s league.
Ashwin’s unsold status, however, comes at a time when he is actively expanding his franchise cricket career after retiring from the IPL. He is set to represent India at the Hong Kong Sixes in November and will feature for Sydney Thunder in Australia’s Big Bash League later this year.
A stalwart of Indian cricket, Ashwin has taken 72 wickets in 65 T20Is at 23.22. In the IPL, he claimed 187 wickets across 221 matches while representing Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab, Rising Pune Supergiant, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.
