KL Rahul surpasses Ben Duckett for most Test runs as opener in 2025, leading with 625 runs after a strong performance against West Indies in Ahmedabad.

Star India wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul on Thursday went past England’s Ben Duckett to become the opener with the most Test runs in 2025. The duo were tied on 602 runs earlier on Thursday, but Rahul eventually took the lead. Both of them have had a stupendous year in red-ball cricket.

Rahul was unbeaten on 53 at the end of the opening day’s play of the first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad, which was his 19th Test fifty.

Rahul, who struck the first half-century of the series, was batting on 53 off 114 deliveries with six boundaries, accompanied by India skipper Shubman Gill on 18 (42 balls, 1x4s).

Most Runs As An Opener In Tests In 2025

KL Rahul: 625* runs

Ben Duckett: 602 runs

Yashasvi Jaiswal: 479 runs

Usman Khawaj: 461 runs

Zak Crawley: 414 runs

India lost Jaiswal (36) after his 68-run opening partnership with Rahul and B Sai Sudharsan (7) fell soon after, but the hosts remained unchallenged on the opening day of this two-Test affair.

For someone who has almost every shot in his arsenal, Jaiswal took a patient approach to the knock, smacking his first four after facing 37 balls. But he turned on the heat, smacking six more over the next 16 deliveries before he fell.

Once he broke free, Jaiswal dealt only in fours on both sides of the wicket and from a sedate start of 4 off 36 deliveries, he raced to 36 off 54 balls, smacking seven boundaries overall.

But paying the price of playing one shot too many, Jaiswal cut one close to his body, which resulted in an outside edge going to Shai Hope behind the wickets off Jayden Seales.

Rahul is also the third-highest run-scorer this year in Tests, only behind Gill and Zimbabwe’s Sean Williams.

Rahul’s best performance this year came at Leeds, when he scored 137 in the second innings, although that wasn’t enough to take India to a win. He also scored 100 at Lord’s, but India lost again.

Rahul also scored a crucial 90 in Manchester, helping India draw the game and stay alive in the recent five-match series.
