KL Rahul scored 100 runs from 197 balls for Team India in the first innings of the ongoing first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad. The century at Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday (October 3) helped Rahul overtake Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma in an elite list. During their playing days, Gambhir and Rohit scored nine Test centuries for India as openers, whereas Rahul now has 10 Test centuries as an opener to his name.
He completed his 10th Test century as opener for India on Friday morning by taking a single on the 190th ball he faced. He hammered 12 fours for the Shubman Gill-led side.
Sunil Gavaskar holds the record for scoring the most Test centuries for India as an opener. During his 16-year-long Test career, Gavaskar played 125 matches and scored 34 centuries. Of his 34 centuries, 33 came as an opening batter.
He is followed by Virender Sehwag, who made 22 centuries as a Test opener. Murali Vijay is the third batter ahead of Rahul in the elite list. Vijay scored 12 Test centuries as an opener for the Indian team.

The century by Rahul on Friday is his second hundred in Tests played at home. His last Test century in front of Indian fans was way back in December 2016 against England. In the first innings of the India-England Test played at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Rahul scored 199 runs for the Virat Kohli-led side.
There was a 3211-day gap between the first and second Test centuries at home for KL Rahul—the longest such gap for an Indian batter between two centuries at home. The previous longest was Ravichandran Ashwin’s 2655 days between 2013 & 2021.
During his stay at the crease in the first innings, Rahul added 68 runs for the first wicket with Yashasvi Jaiswal (36 runs from 54 balls) and 98 runs for the third wicket with captain Shubman Gill, who made 50 runs from 100 balls.
Rahul was dismissed by Jomel Warrican in the second session of the second day’s play at Narendra Modi Stadium. Justin Greaves completed his catch on the 5th ball of the 68th over.
