Jos Buttler made history by being named in England’s playing XI for the second T20I against Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on February 1.

He surpassed James Anderson’s record for the most international matches played for England. This match marked Buttler’s 402nd appearance in all formats for England, while Anderson finished with 401.

Buttler is not only England’s most capped player but also their top run-scorer in T20 matches.

Most capped England players:

  1. Jos Buttler*: 402 matches
  2. James Anderson: 401 matches
  3. Joe Root*: 384 matches
  4. Eoin Morgan: 356 matches
  5. Stuart Broad: 344 matches

The all-time record for most international appearances belongs to former India captain Sachin Tendulkar, who played 664 matches for India from 1989 to 2013, scoring 34,357 runs and taking 201 wickets.

Buttler, from Taunton, has played 57 Tests, 199 ODIs, and 146 T20Is since making his international debut against India in August 2011. One of his career highlights was leading England to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan.

He will participate in the upcoming T20 World Cup as a wicketkeeper-batter, having stepped down from captaincy after last year’s Champions Trophy, with Harry Brook now in charge.

In the first T20I, Buttler scored quickly, making 17 runs off 10 balls, hitting four boundaries. England won that match by 11 runs using the DLS method in a reduced 17-over game.

England aims to clinch the series with another win against Sri Lanka, who scored a solid 189/5 after Brook chose to bowl first.
