India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav has shared an update on the injuries of Tilak Varma and Washington Sundar. Both players are expected to participate in the T20 World Cup 2026, although their readiness for the matches is still uncertain. Suryakumar is optimistic that they will be fit before the first game scheduled for February 7.
The captain mentioned he spoke to both players, who are showing good progress in their recovery. Tilak has begun batting practice in the nets and recently participated in a match simulation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Washington is also set to return to the field soon, according to the 35-year-old skipper.
“Washington Sundar is doing well. We spoke to both of them (Tilak Varma and Washington Sundar) yesterday (Friday). Tilak is improving. Washington has nearly resumed bowling and batting, so he’s looking good. Hopefully, we’ll have him back soon,” Suryakumar stated during the post-match press conference.
Both players are expected to play crucial roles in India’s title defense at the T20 tournament. Tilak will strengthen the top order, while Washington will contribute in various capacities with his all-round skills.
India will kick off their tournament campaign against the United States of America on Saturday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. They will face Namibia next on February 12 in New Delhi, followed by a match against arch-rivals Pakistan in Colombo. India’s last league match will be against the Netherlands in Ahmedabad on February 18.
