Sam Curran Achieves Hat Trick in Sri Lanka vs England 1st T20I

In a tightly contested match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, England managed to secure a 12-run victory over Sri Lanka by defending a modest score. Despite a mid-innings slump triggered by a strong performance from Dushmantha Chameera, England’s bowlers Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks stepped up to clinch the win.

Dushmantha Chameera dominates England’s batting

The third and final T20I kicked off with intense action as Sri Lanka’s star bowler, Chameera, delivered a stunning performance. After deciding to bowl first, the Sri Lankan team took full advantage of the moisture on the Pallekele pitch. Chameera made his mark quickly, dismissing Ben Duckett lbw for a duck with just his second ball.

The wickets kept falling as Chameera dismantled England’s batting lineup. He ended with impressive figures of 5/24, taking out key players like Sam Curran and Jamie Overton in the final overs. England found themselves struggling at 47/5 after Jos Buttler scored 25 runs. A determined 58 off 48 balls by Curran helped England reach a total of 128/9. Although this score appeared low for today’s standards, the pitch suggested that chasing it would be challenging.

Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks shine as England seals the series

Sri Lanka’s chase for 129 began with confidence as Pathum Nissanka scored 23 runs off 12 balls. At 46/2 after the powerplay, they seemed well on their way to victory. However, bringing in England’s part-time spinners changed everything.

Will Jacks led the charge, bowling tightly and finishing with figures of 3/14 in four overs. He dismissed key batsmen like Kusal Mendis (26) and Kamindu Mendis, drastically weakening Sri Lanka’s middle order as the pressure mounted.

The match took a decisive turn when Jacob Bethell entered the attack. With a standout performance, he claimed 4/11 in just 3.3 overs, contributing to the collapse of Sri Lanka’s lower-order batting. The team, which looked stable at 112/6, crumbled and was bowled out for 116 in 19.3 overs.

England’s success in defending a score of 128 showcased their strategic brilliance in white-ball cricket. By opting for the spin talent of Jacks and Bethell over traditional fast-bowling options in crucial moments, Harry Brook’s squad demonstrated that flexibility can be their strongest asset.
