This World Cup is co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, returning to India after ten years. It features a new format and an expanded structure. With more teams and matches, the competition is more challenging than ever. Every match will have significant stakes, making the level of play incredibly high.

This edition introduces more teams, a greater number of matches, and exciting finishes. Fans can expect tightly contested games, fierce rivalries, and unforgettable moments. The pressure on teams will be constant, making this format very engaging.

Here’s a closer look at the format of T20 World Cup 2026 and what makes it unique.

Format of the T20 World Cup 2026

The ICC is expanding the T20 format, allowing more non-full member teams to join the global competition. Previously, only full member nations participated, along with a few associate teams. This year, a total of 20 teams will compete, divided into four groups of five.

Each team in a group will play against every other team once during the group stage. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8 round. In this stage, the eight qualifying teams will be split into two groups of four, with each team playing the others in its group once. The best two teams from both Super 8 groups will move on to the semi-finals, leading to the final match where the champion is crowned.

Before the tournament even starts, some discussions and controversies have arisen. Notably, Pakistan will not travel to India due to diplomatic issues, so all of their matches will occur in Sri Lanka. If Pakistan makes it to the final, that match will also be held in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the Super 8 group assignments will be based on pre-determined seedings, ensuring Pakistan plays all its matches in Sri Lanka.
