Sri Lanka faces a significant challenge ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 as young fast bowler Eshan Malinga has been ruled out of the tournament due to a shoulder injury. This news comes as a blow to the team, which relied on Malinga’s pace and wicket-taking skills to enhance their bowling in home conditions. He injured himself during the second T20I against England on February 1, just days before the tournament starts.
Eshan Malinga ruled out due to shoulder injury
Malinga sustained the injury in a dramatic moment after a rain delay during the match. On his first delivery after the break, he immediately grabbed his non-bowling shoulder and collapsed during his follow-through. He had to leave the field and missed the third T20I of the series. Medical evaluations later confirmed that the injury would prevent him from participating in the entire T20 World Cup, a setback for Sri Lanka’s hopes.
Pramod Madushan named as replacement
In light of Malinga’s unfortunate situation, Sri Lanka Cricket has announced Pramod Madushan as his replacement in the 15-member squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Madushan, who was initially omitted from the squad earlier this month, has now received another chance to showcase his skills on the International stage.
The selectors chose Madushan as a direct replacement because of his ability to bowl at pace and perform well in both powerplay and middle overs. Although he hasn’t played regularly in T20Is lately, his statistics are promising. In eight T20Is, he has taken 12 wickets at an economy rate of 8.63, better than Malinga’s 9.41 in the same number of matches.
For Madushan, this call-up is an opportunity to prove himself in the national team during a high-stakes tournament. His inclusion adds experience and depth to Sri Lanka’s fast bowling lineup at a time when flexibility will be crucial.
Reshaping the pace attack as Sri Lanka finalizes squad
Malinga’s absence is particularly disappointing given his recent rise among Sri Lanka’s fast bowlers. He had moved up the ranks after impressing in the 2025 IPL, showcasing his raw speed and aggressive style. Since his T20I debut last November, Malinga had taken eight wickets in eight matches, emerging as one of Sri Lanka’s promising bowling talents.
With Madushan now part of the squad, Sri Lanka’s pace attack will be led by Matheesha Pathirana and Dushmantha Chameera, combining speed with experience. The team, champions in 2014, will begin their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against Ireland at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on February 8. Their group also includes Australia, Oman, and Zimbabwe, making consistency and squad balance vital for advancement.
