The West Indies started their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign at Eden Gardens in Kolkata with a 35-run victory over Scotland. While Scotland’s batsmen showed some early promise, the West Indies’ powerful batting and effective bowling made the difference.
Shimron Hetmyer led the charge, scoring 64 runs off 36 balls, including six sixes. Rovman Powell contributed with a quick 24 runs from 14 balls, and Sherfane Rutherford added 26 runs off 13 balls in the closing overs.
Brandon King and Shai Hope also played key roles, with scores of 35 and 19, respectively. Romario Shepherd and Matthew Forde finished the innings without losing their wickets, bringing the total to a solid 182/5 in 20 overs. Hetmyer’s skills were on full display, not only through his batting but also with a notable catch to dismiss Scotland’s George Munsey.
Shepherd’s Hat-Trick Secures Win for West Indies
Scotland had some good moments, especially from captain Berrington and Bruce. A timely free-hit got Bruce started, and Berrington’s aggressive batting raised hopes for a successful chase. However, needing 69 runs from 42 balls, Scotland’s fortunes changed with Shepherd’s impressive bowling performance.
The Guyanese bowler took a hat-trick, adding to his earlier five-wicket haul, which led to a dramatic collapse. Scotland went from a promising 115/4 to 147 all out in just 18.5 overs, leaving them little chance of recovery.
The West Indies’ combination of strong batting and effective bowling proved too much for Scotland. Hetmyer’s innings and sharp fielding set the tone, while Shepherd’s bowling sealed the victory. With this strong start, the Caribbean team has signaled to their Group C rivals that they are a team to watch in the T20 World Cup 2026.
