The India vs Pakistan match is always a highlight in every ICC tournament, creating substantial financial benefits. This rivalry has historically brought in significant revenue for governing bodies, broadcasters, and host countries. Recently, a post from the Pakistan government on social media suggesting the team might miss the 2026 T20 World Cup game against India has stirred concerns within the Cricket community.

The upcoming India-Pakistan match set for February 15 in Sri Lanka is now in question, as Pakistan seems to be reconsidering its stance. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been in discussions with ICC deputy chair Imran Khwaja to address various issues.

Reports indicate that Pakistan has a strong relationship with Sri Lanka Cricket. Following communication from Colombo, there is a growing awareness of the financial consequences for Sri Lanka if the match does not take place. A source mentioned to Telecom Asia Sport that “there is now a clear pathway for the T20 World Cup’s biggest commercial draw to be staged.”

The PCB is ranked fourth in the ICC’s annual revenue structure, receiving about USD 34.5 million, behind India, England, and Australia. “Pakistan’s strong position has improved its negotiating power regarding long-standing concerns. Many believe that due to Pakistan’s crucial role in this major revenue-generating match, the board should receive a larger financial share,” the source added.

Pakistan continues to advocate for the return of bilateral cricket with India, which has been paused for years due to political issues. The two teams last competed in a full series in 2013. The PCB has requested ICC assistance in discussions with the BCCI, but progress may be limited, as the final decision rests with India’s government.

“Besides seeking a higher revenue share, Pakistan is asking the ICC to help initiate talks with the BCCI to resume bilateral cricket. The decision to avoid full series lies with the government, not the BCCI, meaning that until New Delhi approves, resuming bilateral relations remains doubtful,” the source explained.

An incident occurred earlier when Indian players opted not to perform the traditional handshake with Pakistan, marking the ongoing tensions following a terror attack in 2024.

Pakistan has already secured a victory in the tournament.
