The Peshawar Zalmi team faced a setback when their key Afghan player, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, announced he would not participate in the Pakistan Super League.

Gurbaz shared his decision via social media just days before the auction, surprising Zalmi, who had already included him in their roster for the upcoming season.

The Afghan batsman cited a busy schedule after the World Cup and his commitment to other responsibilities as the reason for his withdrawal.

“After the World Cup, I won’t be available for the PSL this season due to my schedule. My foundation work in Afghanistan will be my main priority. I want to thank you for your support and affection,” he stated.

PAK-AFG Tensions Add to Speculation

Gurbaz’s announcement sparked speculation that political tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan influenced his decision.

Reports suggest relations soured after recent airstrikes by Pakistan in Afghanistan, impacting the overall sports ties between the two nations.

Following this incident, several Afghan cricketers chose to boycott the PSL. Naveen-ul-Haq opted for County Cricket instead of joining the league in Pakistan.

Gurbaz had previously diverged from the trend by agreeing to play for Peshawar Zalmi, but changed his mind just days before the auction, prompting thoughts that current tensions affected his choice.

Comparison With Mustafizur Rahman Case

Gurbaz’s situation has been likened to that of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman in the IPL.

Mustafizur was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for the IPL 2026 season, but political unrest led to pressure that resulted in KKR ending his contract, which upset the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

However, in Gurbaz’s case, he stepped away voluntarily without being released by the franchise.

Could Gurbaz Face Action From PSL?

The key question now is whether Gurbaz will face penalties for his withdrawal.

If Zalmi had released him, there would be no issue. However, since he left after being selected in the draft, PSL authorities may impose penalties.

The PSL management might bar him from future seasons, as franchises plan their teams and budgets based on auction selections.

Peshawar Zalmi will now need to find new players, leaving Gurbaz’s future in the PSL uncertain.
