The dynamics between India‘s head coach Gautam Gambhir and legendary batsman Virat Kohli have sparked considerable discussion in Cricket, especially with recent changes in the national team. As India goes through a transition after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, interest has grown regarding their relationship within the current team framework.
Though social media often suggests ongoing tension, the real situation in the dressing room remains a topic of public fascination. On February 8, 2026, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia finally clarified whether the perceived conflict is a genuine issue or simply a reflection of their high-profile past.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarifies the Virat Kohli-Gautam Gambhir relationship
In a recent interview on the India Today podcast, Saikia provided clear insights into the relationship between Kohli and Gambhir. He denied the persistent rumors of discord, affirming, “I have never seen them fighting. They are in a very good cordial relationship.”
When asked about the well-known IPL 2023 conflict that some believe triggered a ‘cold war,’ Saikia minimized the incident. He stated he focuses on their performance while representing India, rather than on franchise rivalries. He emphasized that the idea of a ‘feuding’ duo is more about public perception than what happens in the dressing room, and that both players are committed to the success of Indian cricket.
“I haven’t seen it. IPL? Maybe I didn’t see that match because I was with them when they were representing the country. So, IPL: watching every match is not possible. That perception might be there, but Virat Kohli is always in the team. Gautam Gambhir is also there. We see the results. Have you seen Virat Kohli not being a part of the team?” Saikia added.
Will Kohli and Rohit Sharma play in the ODI World Cup 2027? BCCI secretary responds
The conversation also included the sudden transition where Kohli and Rohit retired from Test cricket in May 2025 to concentrate on the 50-over format. Saikia dismissed the notion that Gambhir pushed for younger players, stating that the board does not interfere in significant career decisions.
Even though both senior players were moved to Grade B contracts due to their single-format focus, they are still crucial to India’s ODI World Cup 2027 plans. Saikia dismissed claims that Gambhir wanted them removed from the ODI squad, highlighting their ongoing roles and performances as evidence of their importance.
“Nobody can force a player of the stature of Virat Kohli to change and make a decision. He is at that level. He is not an ordinary player; he is a legend in Indian cricket. Nobody can force him to decide unless he chooses to. The board will not interfere in any player’s career. A lot of people write rubbish also. We cannot comment on rubbish. We don’t see any such things. These things were never brought up in any meetings,” Saikia concluded.
