Scotland bounced back from a loss against the West Indies by defeating debutant Italy by 73 runs at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. This victory not only marked Scotland’s first point in the 2026 T20 World Cup but also added to Italy’s challenges on the world stage.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Scotland scored 207/4, the highest total in Group C so far. George Munsey was the standout performer, scoring 84 runs off 54 balls, which included 13 fours and two sixes, at a strike rate of 155.55. Brandon McMullen also contributed significantly, finishing with an unbeaten 41 runs off just 18 balls.
Michael Leask provided a late boost with a quick-fire 22 runs off five balls, leading Scotland to a run rate of 10.35 per over. Italy struggled to contain Scotland’s batting, with only Ali Hasan managing to maintain some control, finishing with figures of 1/21.
Leask’s bowling played a crucial role in securing the win. Defending 208 runs, Scotland took early wickets and pressured Italy throughout the innings. Leask’s impressive figures of 4/17 in four overs included key dismissals of Justin Mosca, Harry Manenti, Grant Stewart, and Gian-Piero Meade. Italy’s middle order faltered, collapsing from 113/4 to 134 all out in just 16.4 overs.
Although Ben Manenti scored a fighting 52 off 31 balls and Harry Manenti added 37, the required run rate quickly became unattainable. Mark Watt (2/24) and Brad Currie (1/12) supported Leask well as Scotland’s bowlers maintained tight control.
Italy’s T20 World Cup debut was intended to honor a cricketing history of over 200 years, but the match underscored the challenges they face against more experienced teams. This struggle is not unique to Cricket, as Italy’s football team is also grappling with qualification issues and the possibility of missing another FIFA World Cup. The absence of captain Wayne Madsen due to injury further complicated Italy’s efforts. For Scotland, this win helped them recover from an earlier defeat to the West Indies, boosting their morale as they look to build momentum, while Italy continues to search for answers in both cricket and football.
