The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has seen a major shift as Pakistan has decided to participate in its scheduled match against India. This much-anticipated game is set for February 15 in Colombo.

Cricket Board (PCB) and the government announced a boycott of the match, creating uncertainty for one of the tournament’s highlight events, which troubled the ICC.

After a series of discussions and diplomatic efforts, Pakistan reversed its decision, much to the relief of fans, broadcasters, and tournament organizers.

BCCI Vice-President Thanks ICC for Mediation

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla expressed gratitude to the International Cricket Council for its role in resolving the issue after Pakistan changed its stance. He acknowledged the ICC’s leadership for effectively managing the situation.

Rajeev Shukla said:

“I appreciate the ICC chairman (Jay Shah) and other officials for finding an effective solution. After engaging with the PCB and BCB, and considering all perspectives, this decision was made.”

Shukla emphasized that this outcome demonstrates how dialogue and teamwork can uphold the spirit of the game, especially during a global event like the World Cup.

ICC Meeting Plays Key Role

On Monday, the ICC released a statement confirming that a meeting with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi and officials from the Bangladesh Cricket Board was constructive. The discussions covered several sensitive topics.

The ICC noted that Bangladesh’s absence from the T20 World Cup was unfortunate but would not impact their status in international cricket. No penalties would be imposed on Bangladesh, which opted out of competing in India due to security concerns.

Decision Important for Cricket, Says Shukla

Rajeev Shukla stated that the ICC’s decision was significant for both the tournament and the sport as a whole.

He added:

“This decision is crucial for cricket’s future. The World Cup can thrive because cricket must go on. The ICC has achieved a key milestone, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board commended this decision after considering all concerns.”

His comments highlighted how the ICC managed various viewpoints while maintaining the tournament’s integrity.

Why Pakistan Changed Its Stand

Initially, Pakistan supported the boycott in solidarity with Bangladesh, which was replaced by Scotland in the tournament. The situation shifted when Aminul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, urged Pakistan to focus on cricket instead of the boycott.

Sri Lanka played a role in easing tensions. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake spoke directly with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, requesting that the team participate in the match.

The ICC meeting that followed these discussions led Pakistan to end its boycott.

Current Tournament Situation

In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, both India and Pakistan have competed in their initial matches. India started strong with a win against the USA, while Pakistan narrowly defeated the Netherlands.

India is set to face Namibia on February 12, and Pakistan will play against the USA on February 10. With the boycott lifted, the eagerly awaited India-Pakistan match in Colombo is now confirmed.
