The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) T20, which will take place from April 3 to 15. This marks Bangladesh’s first franchise-based T20 tournament for women cricketers.
The inaugural league will feature three teams consisting of national players and emerging talents. Local players will be chosen through a draft, and franchises can also sign overseas players for increased global participation.
Nigar Sultana, captain of the Bangladesh women’s team, praised the BCB’s decision, viewing it as a significant move for the growth of women’s cricket in the country. She believes the tournament will provide excellent preparation for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England this June.
“I’ve been hearing for years that the WBPL was coming, and now it’s finally here. It’s great news. We have always wanted a competitive franchise tournament for women. Other countries have established women’s T20 leagues, and they are reaping benefits,” Sultana said.
“To compete at the world level in T20 cricket, we need to follow how other nations are advancing through franchise cricket. Many players participate in leagues worldwide, enhancing their skills in diverse ways. For us, this is a fantastic opportunity,” she added.
“Additionally, it will be a significant experience for local players and those passionate about the game. Bringing in top International players who regularly compete in franchise leagues to share their experiences will elevate the overall quality of cricket. With the T20 World Cup approaching, this is ideal preparation,” she concluded.
Rubaba Dowla, BCB Director and Chairperson of the BCB Women’s Wing, will head the WBPL Governing Council.
