In a thrilling match that kept fans on the edge of their seats, South Africa defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the first Women’s T20I at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom. While Pakistan’s captain, Fatima Sana, delivered an impressive innings under pressure, it was Laura Wolvaardt and South Africa’s overall batting effort that clinched the win.
The game featured all the excitement typical of a T20 match, including early setbacks, bold recovery attempts, middle-order struggles, and a gripping finish that came down to the last ball.
Fatima Sana’s brave innings lifts Pakistan to 180
Asked to bat first, Pakistan faced early difficulties. They fell to 64 for 6 within the first 10 overs, putting them in a challenging position. South Africa’s bowlers, led by Kayla Reyneke, consistently took wickets.
Reyneke excelled, finishing with figures of 2 for 13 in her four overs, including a maiden. She dismissed Gull Feroza and Natalia Pervaiz, while Ayanda Hlubi and Nonkululeko Mlaba contributed to Pakistan’s struggles.
However, when the situation seemed dire, Sana came to the crease and dramatically changed the momentum.
She launched an impressive counterattack, scoring 90 runs off 41 balls with seven sixes and nine fours. Her aggressive batting transformed Pakistan’s innings, especially in the final overs. Overs from Mlaba, Hlubi, and Ayabonga Khaka were costly, allowing Pakistan to finish at a competitive total of 180 for 9.
Despite losing wickets at the other end, Sana’s fearless play kept Pakistan on track.
Laura Wolvaardt guides South Africa’s chase
Chasing a target of 181 wasn’t easy, but South Africa started boldly. Tazmin Brits hit early boundaries before being dismissed by Humna Bilal. Afterwards, Wolvaardt and Sune Luus steadied the innings with a partnership of 62 runs.
Luus scored a quick 32 before her dismissal by Nashra Sandhu, while Wolvaardt kept up the pressure, reaching a 31-ball half-century. By the time they reached 10 overs, South Africa stood at a strong 102 for 2.
However, the match grew tense again as Sandhu dismissed Wolvaardt for 61, and quick wickets of Dane van Niekerk and Lara Goodall brought Pakistan back into the game. At 153 for 5 with three overs remaining, South Africa needed 28 runs, leading to a nail-biting conclusion.
Kayla Reyneke delivers in the clutch
Reyneke, impactful with the ball, also made her mark with the bat. Her unbeaten 29 off 16 balls proved vital. She hit important boundaries and a crucial six in the final overs to keep the chase on track.
With two runs needed off the last ball, Reyneke kept her cool and hit the delivery for a six, triggering celebrations among the South African players. They finished at 185 for 5, securing a remarkable five-wicket victory.
While South Africa celebrated a well-earned win, Sana’s fearless innings of 90 was a standout moment, showcasing her determination as a captain.
