Australia will begin their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 journey without one of their key players. Captain Mitchell Marsh confirmed that Tim David will not play in the opening match against Ireland on Wednesday, February 11. This decision aims to prioritize David’s long-term health after a recent hamstring injury.
Mitchell Marsh on Tim David’s Expected Return
Although David has shown good form in training in Colombo, the team has opted for caution. The champions want to ensure he is fully fit for the critical stages of the tournament. Marsh reassured the media that David’s absence is temporary.
“We’ll certainly see him come back into contention over the next few games,” Marsh said, providing reassurance to those looking forward to watching David play.
Marsh noted that despite David nearing match readiness, medical advice suggests it’s best not to rush him back. Although David has successfully participated in training, the team wants him at full capacity when it matters most. He has not played a competitive game since last December, when he injured his hamstring while playing for the Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL. This injury forced him to miss Australia’s T20 series in Pakistan, allowing him to focus on recovery.
Since joining the squad in Sri Lanka last week, the 29-year-old has impressed during practices. He has been active in nearly all training sessions, aside from one optional practice, and has completed numerous running and fielding drills. On Tuesday, he was spotted sprinting between the wickets, indicating good progress in his recovery.
Additional Injury Concerns for Australia
David is not the only injury concern for the Australian team. They are already without two senior fast bowlers: Pat Cummins due to a back injury and Josh Hazlewood with an Achilles issue. However, there is good news as Marsh confirmed that Nathan Ellis has recovered from his hamstring problem and is ready to play. Additionally, leg-spinner Adam Zampa has also returned after a minor groin issue.
