Riyan Parag has officially stepped into his new role as captain of the Rajasthan Royals. He expressed his gratitude for the support he received from former captain Sanju Samson and teammates Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel. Parag acknowledged the loyalty of the Royals’ fans, who have consistently supported the team through various changes.
This leadership transition follows a strategic shift for the Royals, who traded Sanju Samson to the Chennai Super Kings for all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
Looking for a long-term leader, the management focused on younger players. While Jaiswal and Jurel were strong candidates due to their growing International profiles, Parag was ultimately chosen as the future leader of the team.
Parag shared that his preparation for leadership started earlier than many realize. In a recent video, he mentioned that Sanju Samson encouraged him to take on leadership responsibilities during the 2025 preseason.
Following an injury Samson sustained in the England series, he asked Parag to prepare to lead when the chance arose.
Riyan Parag Begins New Era as Rajasthan Royals Captain
Riyan Parag’s captaincy is a result of careful planning and strong internal support. With the backing of Samson and trust from the franchise management, Parag is stepping into a role he has long prepared for. Supported by his teammates and the fans, he looks forward to this new chapter.
“When Jos (Buttler) left during the Eliminator, Sanju Bhaiya (Samson) asked me to be the second in command, helping him with the bowling and other tasks. That’s when I began my leadership journey,” Parag said.
While the decision sparked discussion online, with many arguing that Yashasvi Jaiswal was a better captain choice, the atmosphere in the dressing room remains positive. Despite external criticism, the players maintain a strong relationship, prioritizing team unity.
“The first thing (Yashasvi) Jaiswal said was, ‘Congrats mere bhai, jitte hain’ (Congrats brother, let’s win it together),” Riyan Parag revealed.
