Nearly two years after his last role in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he helped Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) win the 2024 championship as a mentor, Gautam Gambhir has a chance to return to the IPL.
According to a report from Dainik Jagran, one of the new owners of the Rajasthan Royals has offered Gambhir a multi-role position that includes being a partner, mentor, and CEO.
This new stakeholder in Rajasthan Royals is proposing a deal that would give Gambhir a two-to-three percent stake along with the CEO and mentor roles.
However, Gambhir cannot accept this offer as he is currently the head coach of the Indian team. A ruling from the Supreme Court, based on the Lodha Committee’s guidelines, prevents anyone from holding both a franchise role in the IPL and a position with the national team due to conflicts of interest.
If Gambhir accepts the proposal from Rajasthan, he would have to resign as India’s head coach. Sources close to him indicate that he is focused on his current role. His term as coach will end after the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
Since retiring from playing, Gambhir has worked with two IPL teams. He mentored the Lucknow Super Giants from 2022 to 2023, leading them to the playoffs in both years. In 2024, he joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a similar position before becoming India’s head coach in July 2024, succeeding Rahul Dravid.
Gambhir is now leading India’s T20 World Cup efforts at home. The defending champions have performed excellently, winning all three group-stage matches against the USA, Namibia, and Pakistan, securing their place in the Super 8s.
