The head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, commended Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake for playing a key role in ensuring the India-Pakistan match at the T20 World Cup 2026 occurred. In a meeting in Colombo, Naqvi explained that there were differing opinions among Pakistan’s leaders about proceeding with this important game, but Dissanayake’s involvement helped reach a decision.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had directed the team not to play against India on February 15 as a show of ‘solidarity’ with Bangladesh, which had been ousted from the tournament. This prompted extensive discussions between Naqvi and the International Cricket Council. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) also urged Naqvi, who serves as the interior minister in Sharif’s cabinet, to end the boycott.
Here is what Naqvi said:
“First of all, warm greetings from the President of Pakistan and the Prime Minister of Pakistan… They specifically asked me to convey their greetings to you. Actually, in yesterday’s match, you were the true hero because 2 billion people were entertained because of you… So, it is only because of you that we played the match.”
“We were having several issues regarding playing with India… there was a decision of 50-50,” Naqvi stated. As soon as the Prime Minister received your call, he called me and said, there is no more issue… we have to play the match. That’s it,” he said. “So, it is because of just you that you managed and got this done… I am very thankful to you that you played a very critical role in this,” Naqvi concluded.
Mohsin Naqvi’s statements highlighted the significant influence of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in making the India-Pakistan match at the T20 World Cup 2026 happen. With uncertainty surrounding the match due to Pakistan’s leadership issues and the Prime Minister’s initial instructions, Dissanayake’s effective intervention resolved the situation. Naqvi expressed sincere gratitude, calling the president the “true hero” for facilitating this important match.
