Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra expressed surprise at the Indian team’s approach in the T20 World Cup 2026 regarding Varun Chakaravarthy’s bowling limits. Chakaravarthy bowled only three overs against the Netherlands at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on February 18.
During this match, Chakaravarthy stood out, taking 3 wickets for 14 runs, contributing to India’s 17-run victory while the Netherlands chased a target of 194 runs. He dismissed Max O’Dowd, Colin Ackermann, and Aryan Dutt, with Ackermann and Dutt falling on consecutive deliveries.
Interestingly, Chakaravarthy bowled his full four overs only in the opening match against the USA. In the subsequent game against Namibia, he took three wickets in just two overs. In the last two matches against Pakistan and the Netherlands, he bowled three overs again.
“It’s surprising that Varun isn’t completing his quota of overs. He has only bowled all four once. If he did, he would likely take at least one five-wicket haul. He will be crucial for us in the next round,” Chopra commented on his official ‘X’ (previously Twitter) account.
In the ongoing T20 World Cup, Chakaravarthy has taken nine wickets in four matches, achieving an impressive average of 6.89. He is currently tied for second place among the tournament’s top wicket-takers.
Chakaravarthy Shines, Yet Overs Remain Limited
Varun Chakaravarthy’s remarkable performances in the T20 World Cup 2026 have led to questions about why he isn’t allowed to bowl his full four overs regularly. With nine wickets in four matches and an outstanding average of 6.89, he has proven to be a vital player for India.
His knack for breaking partnerships, as seen against the Netherlands, adds to his value in the team. Allowing him to bowl more overs could enhance his impact, keeping the pressure on opposing batsmen and helping India maintain control throughout the tournament.
