In a crucial Group A match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Pakistan made two significant changes to their lineup against Namibia at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. With their hopes of advancing to the Super 8 on the line, Pakistan decided to bench pace bowler Shaheen Afridi and spinner Abrar Ahmed for this important game.

Pakistan captain Salman Agha won the toss and opted to bat first, signaling his team’s intention to apply pressure on Namibia in this effectively knockout situation for the 2009 champions.

Reasons for Shaheen Afridi and Abrar Ahmed’s absence

During the toss, Agha mentioned that Salman Mirza and Khawaja Nafay would replace Afridi and Abrar. However, he did not provide details regarding any injuries or specific strategies behind their omission.

“We’ve got two changes. Salman and Nafay are playing. Shaheen and Abrar are missing out. The batting has just been a concern for us. We need to bat well. We batted well against the USA, and we need a similar performance today,” Agha stated.

While no clear explanation was given, the decision seems to be based on performance. Afridi and Abrar have struggled throughout the tournament, with Afridi not securing early breakthroughs and Abrar’s variations not being effective on these pitches. Given the stakes of this match, the management likely wished to refresh the lineup.

Batting issues prompt adjustments

Agha’s comments highlight that Pakistan’s biggest concern has been inconsistent batting. Although there have been moments of excellence, the batting lineup has often failed to build strong totals. The captain stressed the need to repeat their stronger performance against the USA, indicating a shift in focus toward enhancing the batting approach.

Nafay’s addition aims to reinforce the middle order, and Mirza’s inclusion may bring a fresh bowling perspective. With these changes, Pakistan appears to be searching for better balance rather than depending solely on star players.

This match against Namibia is a must-win for Pakistan. Losing could eliminate them from Super 8 qualification, making team selection even more critical.
