Age often comes up in Cricket discussions, but Roelof van der Merwe proved that it doesn’t matter much when fitness and awareness are present.
A notable moment occurred during India’s final group match in the T20 World Cup 2026 against the Netherlands at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on February 18. In the ninth over, Logan van Beek bowled a slower delivery outside off. Tilak Varma, who was playing well with 31 runs from 27 balls, tried to hit it over long-off to break the middle-overs pressure.
However, due to the ball’s lack of speed, Tilak couldn’t hit it high or far enough. Van der Merwe, positioned slightly wider than usual at long-off, read the ball’s direction perfectly. He covered a lot of ground to his right, timed his dive perfectly, and made an incredible reverse-cup catch, keeping the ball secure even after hitting the ground.
