Glenn McGrath has raised concerns about Australia’s choice to select all-rounder Cameron Green over Steve Smith after their early exit from the T20 World Cup 2026. Green, who was expected to contribute with both bat and ball, managed only 24 runs in three matches, prompting questions about his position in the team.

“If he’s not bowling, the selectors are essentially saying that he’s a better option than Steve Smith. I just don’t see how he justifies his place in the team,” McGrath told the Sunday Morning Herald.

Australia entered the T20 World Cup 2026 as strong contenders but faced injuries and poor form, leading to their early exit. After winning their first match against Ireland, the 2021 champions lost to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.

Regarding Australia’s performance, McGrath noted that the team’s once-feared reputation has diminished. “From the start of this World Cup, we expressed our concerns about Australia. Now, it’s clear that they no longer intimidate other teams. Sadly, this outcome isn’t surprising,” he added.

Jason Gillespie also expressed doubts about Cameron Green and Cooper Connolly’s performances, stating they haven’t justified the faith put in them.

“Cooper Connolly, and to a lesser extent Cameron Green, are not living up to expectations,” he mentioned.

Australia will conclude their T20 World Cup journey on Friday when they face Oman at the Pallekele International Stadium in Sri Lanka.
