Cricket West Indies (CWI) has revealed a 15-member West Indies Women squad for their upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, taking place from February 20 to 25 at the National Cricket Stadium in St George’s, Grenada. This series is crucial for the team’s aim to improve their position in the ICC Women’s Championship standings.
With important International matches later this year against Australia, Ireland, Zimbabwe, and Pakistan, the Maroon Warriors view this home series as a vital opportunity to build team synergy and enhance their performance in the 50-over format.
Hayley Matthews resumes captaincy
Skipper Hayley Matthews is back in charge, having fully recovered from a shoulder injury that sidelined her last June, including missing the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL). Matthews’ return is expected to bring stability and confidence, given her impactful play both with bat and ball.
In a leadership change, Chinelle Henry has been named vice-captain, taking over from veteran wicketkeeper-batter Shemaine Campbelle. Henry’s strong performances in international cricket and franchise leagues have positioned her as an emerging leader in the team. This change signals a gradual transition within the West Indies setup, combining experienced players with new leadership.
Deandra Dottin returns to the team
Another important addition for the Maroon Warriors is seasoned all-rounder Deandra Dottin, who missed much of the 2025 season due to injury, including the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Pakistan and following series in England and against South Africa. Her return enhances the team’s middle order and adds depth to the bowling attack. Dottin is known for her decisive performances and fearless playing style, which could be crucial against a strong Sri Lankan team.
A balanced squad for home advantage
The squad consists of a good mix of experienced players and newcomers. Veterans like Stafanie Taylor and Shemaine Campbelle provide vital composure in tense situations, while younger players such as Jahzara Claxton, Realeanna Grimmond, and Jannillea Glasgow are seen as the future of West Indies cricket.
The bowling lineup is versatile, with Karishma Ramharack and Afy Fletcher offering spin options suitable for the surfaces in Grenada. Aaliyah Alleyne and Shawnisha Hector contribute pace variations, while Ashmini Munisar and Shunelle Sawh further bolster the spin options, allowing the team flexibility across the three matches.
As the ICC Women’s Championship heats up, every ODI is important. Playing at home provides the West Indies a valuable chance to gain momentum, refine strategies, and strengthen their standing in the rankings.
