KOLKATA, India (AP) — West Indies finished the T20 World Cup group stage unbeaten, defeating Italy by 42 runs on Thursday with Italy bowled out for 123.

This was Italy’s first World Cup, where they impressed by beating Nepal but lost closely to England, Scotland, and the West Indies.

Both teams faced challenges on what seemed like a good batting surface at Eden Gardens.

West Indies captain Shai Hope contributed significantly with 75 runs off 46 balls, marking his second consecutive half-century in the tournament. Ben Manenti was Italy’s top scorer with 26 runs.

West Indies set a target of 165 runs, which proved defendable. Italy lost three wickets during the powerplay, primarily due to medium-pacer Matthew Forde’s efforts, while Shamar Joseph excelled with 4 wickets for 30 runs and also took four catches.

Hope kept the innings in check by opening the batting and hitting four sixes along with six fours until he was dismissed by Crishan Kalugamage in the 16th over.

In the Super Eights, the West Indies will play against 2024 champion India, runner-up South Africa, and Zimbabwe, which eliminated Australia.

“We need to be more aggressive during crucial moments,” Hope stated. “We have batting depth, but we must be smart and precise. We are in good shape for the Super Eights.”

Italy’s captain Harry Manenti expressed pride in their performance, especially against established teams like England and the West Indies.

“We haven’t executed the perfect game, but we’ve shown potential,” Manenti noted. “It’s vital for associate nations to receive support and funding. More games mean better chances to improve and win matches.”
