Jonathan Trott, head coach of Afghanistan, became emotional during his last press conference after the team’s 82-run win over Canada in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. This match marked the end of his three-and-a-half-year tenure as coach. In this press conference, Trott struggled to hold back tears when reflecting on his journey with the Afghan team.

Trott’s Emotional Farewell

The atmosphere in the press room shifted when Trott was asked about his experiences with the team. He paused to collect himself, saying, “I could share many stories, but it’s the talent that stands out. I didn’t want to get upset,” while wiping away tears.

He then paid tribute to the team, highlighting its “natural raw talent” that needs “a little bit of structure to thrive on the International stage.

Afghanistan’s Bittersweet Victory

Afghanistan concluded the tournament with a strong win against Canada, their second victory in the competition. Earlier losses to New Zealand and a heartbreaking double Super Over defeat to South Africa meant they could not move on to the Super 8 stage, while South Africa and New Zealand progressed from Group D.

Opener Ibrahim Zadran led the way with a remarkable unbeaten 95 runs off 56 balls, marking the highest individual score for Afghanistan in this World Cup. Meanwhile, veteran spinner Mohammad Nabi achieved impressive figures of 4 for 7, helping to dismiss Canada for just 118 runs.

Trott’s Reflection on Team Growth

Trott’s emotional reaction came from observing the team’s progress since he took the helm in July 2022. He recalled his first tour with the team in Ireland, comparing their initial “chaotic” state to the refined team now respected globally.

“I remember seeing the players for the first time and thinking, what amazing talent we have. Let’s build on this,” Trott shared, emphasizing the team’s transformation.

He acknowledged the challenges Afghan Cricket faces, such as lacking permanent facilities and structured coaching pathways. “They compete with limited resources yet are expected to reach the semifinals, which is impressive,” he noted.

Trott also contrasted his privileged background with the players’ experiences, stating, “The coaching I received is vastly different from what these players have now.”

For Trott, the greatest joy was witnessing player growth beyond cricket, as they evolved into individuals who could change their family’s futures. “It’s fulfilling to see their lives improve, not just their cricket,” he stated.

Since his appointment, Trott has led Afghanistan to new highs, including their first T20 World Cup semi-final in 2024 and a near-miss in the 2023 50-over World Cup.

Reflecting on key moments, Trott mentioned: “Beating Pakistan in a World Cup for the first time and securing series wins against teams like Pakistan and South Africa.”

What’s Next for Trott?

As Trott wraps up his time with Afghanistan, he expressed uncertainty about his future but hinted at a possible interest in coaching England, the team he represented as a player.

When asked about the England position, he maintained honesty, saying, “I’ve enjoyed this experience, and I’m unsure what comes next. Maybe a brief break before deciding.”

On coaching England, he added, “I’m proud of my cricketing past and would love the chance to coach the team I care about.”

As he concluded his press conference, Trott offered advice for the team’s future development, stressing the importance of enhancing their seam bowling to complement their strong spinners, especially ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

“They need to develop more seamers to handle various conditions,” he advised.

Trott’s emotion during his farewell highlighted the deep connections formed throughout his coaching journey.
