Former Indian cricketer Murali Kartik shared his insights about India’s lineup for the Super Eight match against South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled for February 22 in Ahmedabad.
Kartik emphasized that all-rounder Axar Patel should be brought back into the team, as he is likely to have a significant impact on this crucial game. Axar missed the last group-stage match against the Netherlands.
Regarding India’s team strategy, Kartik mentioned that using eight batters has worked well in the tournament. However, he expressed concern about Abhishek Sharma’s recent performance and hopes he can improve in the upcoming match. Kartik noted that the duel between Abhishek and South Africa’s top bowler, Kagiso Rabada, could be pivotal.
“Axar Patel comes back. He’s absolutely central to India’s planning. I think the formula of going with eight batters has been working. The only bit for them is at the top of the order. Kagiso has not fired as they would have wanted. They will hope that the Kagiso vs Abhishek battle falls in favor of Abhishek,” said Kartik on Cricbuzz.
Abhishek Sharma Under Pressure After Three Consecutive Ducks
Abhishek has faced challenges in the tournament, scoring three consecutive ducks in his last three matches. This slump has raised concerns for the team as they enter the Super Eight stage. While Kartik didn’t provide technical advice, he expressed hope that Abhishek would regain his form at this crucial time.
“They would want these guys to come back roaring into form. Abhishek is yet to open his account and there has been a certain pattern to his dismissals. It will be interesting how he approaches it. Many are sharing their thoughts on how he should go about it,” said Kartik.
Kartik also mentioned Tilak Varma’s performance, noting he still hasn’t found his rhythm in the tournament. Despite the difficulties, Kartik remains hopeful about the young batter, believing that once he clicks, India could perform well. So far, in four matches, Tilak has scored 106 runs with an average of 26.50 and a strike rate of 120.45.
“Regarding Tilak Varma, Surya wants him at three, and he’s had a good run there. It’s a matter of time before he starts performing well. If he gets going, they might enjoy playing in Ahmedabad,” said Kartik.
