As the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) gear up for the upcoming IPL season, fans have received some good news and a reality check. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has confirmed that MS Dhoni will participate, but several reports indicate that the 44-year-old will not play in every match.

Reasons Why MS Dhoni Won’t Play Every Game in IPL 2026

1. Age and Fitness Considerations

The main reason for Dhoni’s limited participation is the physical demands of his age. Dhoni, who will be 45 in July 2026, has been dealing with knee and back issues in recent seasons. Wicketkeeping during the busy IPL schedule—with little rest between games—can be tough on his body.

A senior CSK official stated, “We can confirm that he [Dhoni] is coming to Chennai and has confirmed his availability for the season. Whether he will play all games or not is something we can’t say at the moment.” The management is expected to rotate Dhoni throughout the season to manage his fitness.

2. Sanju Samson’s Presence Offers Strong Backup

CSK’s signing of Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals has strengthened their wicketkeeping options. With Samson now in the team, CSK has a reliable first-choice keeper ready to step in when Dhoni is rested.

Additionally, CSK has Urvil Patel as a backup and 19-year-old Kartik Sharma—a ₹14.20 crore recruit—who is being prepared as a future finisher alongside Shivam Dube. This depth in wicketkeeping allows CSK to manage Dhoni’s playtime effectively without disrupting team balance.

3. Impact Player Rule Eases Batting Pressure

The Impact Player rule, introduced in the last two IPL seasons, has changed Dhoni’s role. He has not been needed as a regular batter during the middle overs, often appearing for crucial moments at the end of the game.

This lighter batting load helps Dhoni conserve energy while contributing his experience on the field. It’s likely that the team will continue this strategy in IPL 2026, using Dhoni mainly as a finisher in shorter bursts rather than expecting him to play long innings.

Home Games: Dhoni Expected to Play

While some rotation is anticipated during the season, one certainty is that Dhoni will play in all home matches at MA Chidambaram Stadium. His presence there not only draws crowds but often shifts momentum in CSK’s favor.

As IPL 2026 approaches, fans can look forward to seeing Dhoni in yellow, though he may not participate in every match. This approach aims to maximize his impact while keeping the 44-year-old fresh for key moments.
