In the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026, a surprising decision was made when the Indian team faced South Africa. Vice-captain Axar Patel was not in the lineup, despite the match being at his home ground.

The outcome mirrored this choice, as India lost by 76 runs. After the game, assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate acknowledged the error, saying, “Yes, it was a mistake.” He explained that they had considered different match-ups but felt the decision was wrong in hindsight. He emphasized that success in the World Cup requires hard work.

Looking ahead, India is set to play two important matches against Zimbabwe and West Indies. To reach the semifinals, they need to win both matches, ideally with a significant victory in at least one to improve their net run rate, which suffered from the loss to South Africa.

At the toss, captain Suryakumar Yadav announced that the team that played the last group match against the Netherlands would compete against South Africa, allowing for Washington Sundar to play instead of Axar.

However, the match did not go as planned. South Africa batted first and scored 187 runs for 7 wickets. India, in reply, was all out for 111 runs in 18.5 overs. Expectations were high for Washington Sundar, who scored only 11 runs and conceded 17 runs in 2 overs, falling short of what was hoped for.
