Sundar Pichai talks about his cricket idol during IND vs SA Super 8 match
Born in Madurai, Pichai reminisced about his childhood as a devoted cricket fan, inspired by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, known as India’s original ‘Little Master.’
During his guest spot on air, the 53-year-old Pichai shared memories of his cricket-filled childhood, recalling times spent listening to radio broadcasts of matches in the West Indies with his grandfather and granduncle. His admiration for Gavaskar was so strong that it adorned his bedroom walls, motivating him even before he became a major player in the tech industry.
“Sunny (Sunil Gavaskar) was a big idol for me. I had the Sportstar poster on my wall. I listened to commentary on the radio for games in the West Indies with my granddad and granduncle. I’ve always loved the game,” Pichai said.
The event was even more special as Pichai had the honor of carrying the ICC T20 World Cup trophy onto the field with his childhood idol, Sunil Gavaskar. The former captain reflected on their connection, appreciating the chance to meet a fan who has found great success internationally. According to India Today, Gavaskar noted that as they walked with the trophy, they both wished for India’s current players to lift it by the tournament’s end.
“I’ve met him before, and he once told me about having my posters in his room. It’s always nice to meet a fan who has done so well in his career, especially in tech. As we walked with the World Cup trophy, we both hoped that Suryakumar Yadav would hold it on the 8th. We’re both praying for that,” Gavaskar said.
