In a crucial match that changed the Group 1 standings, South Africa showcased their skills in T20 Cricket by defeating India by 76 runs during the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup 2026. The game took place on Sunday (February 23) at the renowned Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, marking the end of India’s 12-match winning streak.

Despite a strong start from Jasprit Bumrah, who took 3 wickets for 15 runs and became India’s top wicket-taker in T20 World Cup history, the Indian batting struggled. Chasing a challenging total of 188, India was dismissed for just 111 runs in 18.5 overs, putting their chances of reaching the semifinals in jeopardy.

Suryakumar Yadav on the turning point of the match

After the defeat, India captain Suryakumar Yadav discussed where the game shifted. Although the bowlers had South Africa in trouble at 20/3, the Indian batting order suffered a similar collapse.

In a chase of 185-plus, you need small partnerships to keep the score moving. We lost too many early wickets and didn’t manage those partnerships today. We could have performed better,” said Suryakumar during the post-match presentation.

The Indian top order, including Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Tilak Varma, struggled with the pace of Marco Jansen, who took 4 wickets for 22 runs. By the end of the powerplay, India was in a difficult position, unable to recover from the early setbacks.

South Africa’s dominant performance secures victory over India

The match story revolved around how each team managed the middle overs. After a shaky start, South Africa found stability with David Miller (63 off 35) and Dewald Brevis (45 off 29), who formed a 97-run partnership. This successful recovery allowed Tristan Stubbs to contribute in the later stages, leading the Proteas to a total of 187/7.

Suryakumar noted that India had a good start with the ball, but the game slipped away between overs 7 and 15. He stated, “We bowled well at the beginning, but they batted exceptionally well from 7-15 to take control. We managed a comeback towards the end, but the damage was done.

He also praised the South African bowlers, Jansen and Lungi Ngidi, for their disciplined approach. “They know how to bowl as a pair, taking crucial wickets while keeping the run rate down. Chasing on this surface required a cautious approach, and they didn’t give us any chances,” Suryakumar added.

With this loss, India’s Net Run Rate has suffered significantly, making their upcoming matches against Zimbabwe and West Indies critical for their hopes of advancing.
