Liam Dawson took 2 wickets for 27 runs against Sri Lanka on February 22 and highlighted England’s variety in bowling as crucial to their performance. The team features a strong spin lineup with experienced players like Adil Rashid, Will Jacks, Dawson, and part-time spinner Jacob Bethell.
During the match at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Jacks had an outstanding performance, taking 3 wickets for 22 runs, overpowering the Sri Lankan batters. England is currently in great form, winning all four T20I matches against Sri Lanka in the past four weeks. At this location, Jacks and Rashid have each taken seven wickets, while Dawson has six and Bethell four.
“We’re all different types of spinners. Jacksy gets a lot of overspin and bounce, while Dilly [Rashid] has many variations. I don’t get the same bounce as the others. It will be a different challenge on Tuesday night [against Pakistan]. We might have a better batting wicket. We’ll see,” Dawson said to ESPNcricinfo.
Dawson mentioned that the pitch for the upcoming match against Pakistan is expected to be more conducive for batting. Pallekele typically sees higher scores than the pitches in Colombo. He indicated that he was ready to bowl early in the last match but Jacks took on that duty instead. Dawson also noted that Pallekele rewards diverse spin bowling styles.
“The beauty of this ground is its versatility in bowling. We have four solid spinners, including Bethell, and we have performed well here before. If the pitch is better on Tuesday, we may need to adjust our strategies. All of us are experienced spinners; Adil and I have played a lot, and Jacks has as well. Bethell has a bit less experience,” Dawson explained.
England captain Harry Brook expressed strong support for his spin bowlers, confident they can handle the pressure. Dawson acknowledged that England believed they were 15-20 runs short with the bat. This concern was validated as England’s spinners took seven wickets, leading to Sri Lanka’s total of just 95 runs.
“Harry Brook’s captaincy against Sri Lanka was remarkable. He used all our strengths effectively. There’s a lot of trust in the team to execute our plans,” Dawson remarked.
