Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has strongly criticized Team India following their 76-run loss to South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8. On his YouTube channel, Ashwin discussed what he called a ‘tactical vacuum’ in the Indian team, directly addressing decisions made by the management led by Gautam Gambhir. He noted that the defeat stemmed not merely from a lack of skill but from two major mistakes that left the defending champions looking unprepared.

Ashwin points out two significant mistakes behind India’s Super 8 defeat

MISTAKE #1:

The exclusion of Axar Patel

Ashwin highlighted the biggest mistake as dropping Axar Patel in favor of Washington Sundar. While Sundar was chosen to tackle South Africa’s left-handed batsmen, Ashwin argued that consistency is more crucial than specific match-ups in a World Cup setting. He emphasized that Axar has proven to be India’s most dependable player in the format and should have played.

“While IPL is useful for match-ups, for a World Cup, stability is key. Yes, Washington Sundar should be played against left-handers, but Axar has been your standout player in T20 Cricket,” Ashwin stated.

Ashwin recalled the T20 World Cup 2024 final, where Axar’s partnership with Virat Kohli steadied the innings when the team faced early trouble, a role he could have taken on again as India struggled at 26/3 in the early overs.

“In a similar situation in the previous World Cup, Axar came in and helped India score over 170 runs. With a stable middle order, India could have chased the target,” he added.

MISTAKE #2:

Rinku Singh batting at No. 8

The second blunder that frustrated Ashwin was batting Rinku Singh at No. 8. This decision pushed Washington Sundar up to No. 5, effectively sidelining one of the world’s top T20 finishers. Ashwin stated that Rinku deserves a more significant opportunity rather than being used as a last resort when the match is already out of reach.

“Rinku Singh should not bat at No. 8. He needs to come in much earlier in the order. This taught India a lesson about coming prepared for matches,” noted Ashwin.

When Rinku finally came to the crease, India was in a difficult position at 86/6, with the required run rate climbing. Ashwin believed that a solid middle-order player like Axar should have been in a position to support Rinku, achieving his usual finishing style.
