Ahmed Shehzad has criticized Team India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir for introducing politics into the dressing room. Gambhir is facing scrutiny after India lost to South Africa in their opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, jeopardizing their chances for the semifinals. The selection and team combination decisions have also frustrated former players.

Washington Sundar was chosen over vice-captain Axar Patel for a crucial match, raising eyebrows among R Ashwin and others regarding the exclusion of the experienced player. Speaking on Haarna Mana Hai, Shehzad noted that Gambhir’s attitude shifted during his term as a Member of Parliament from 2019 to 2024.

“A complete focus is needed. Gambhir’s entry into politics changed his mindset. His political career was not successful, and it has affected the team’s image,” Shehzad stated.

He also criticized Gambhir for not utilizing his resources effectively, highlighting the omission of Kuldeep Yadav, who has only played once in the current T20 World Cup.

“Gambhir is not using the resources properly. A match-winner like Kuldeep Yadav should be playing,” he added.

Shehzad believes Kuldeep’s absence may be linked to a dispute with India captain Suryakumar Yadav after their victory against Pakistan. “Suryakumar pushed him during the match against Pakistan. Some are suggesting Kuldeep was sidelined due to a disciplinary issue with Suryakumar. Otherwise, he would have played. Kuldeep is a match-winner,” he mentioned.

Pressure is increasing on Gambhir and Suryakumar, despite the latter not losing a series since taking over as coach and captain. India is set to face Zimbabwe in their second Super 8 match on February 26.
