England’s captain Ben Stokes has praised the County Championship and encouraged players to use this red-ball tournament as a chance to join the Test team before the summer series. The team is set to play six Test matches soon, including three against New Zealand and Pakistan.
Stokes noted the number of skilled players who have recently performed well in the County Championship and made it into the England Lions team.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for many players across the country. With the Lions in Australia at the same time, it’s impressive to see the talent coming through the system right now. The pool of players we have in England is probably the best it’s been in a long time,” Stokes stated on the ICC website.
He believes the early part of the County Championship is very important for players to demonstrate their skills and strengthen their chances for selection in the England Test side.
Stokes was expected to play for Durham in the County Championship but suffered a fractured cheekbone during practice.
“The first six or seven weeks of Championship Cricket will be significant. Players should see this as an opportunity to push for selection, and I hope they prepare themselves well for when we gather,” Stokes added.
After a disappointing Ashes series, where England lost 4-1 to Australia, there are opportunities for new players. With uncertainty around Zak Crawley’s opening position, players like Asa Tribe (Glamorgan), Tom Haines (Sussex), and Ben McKinney (Durham) are expected to be considered for the national team.
Additionally, players like James and Thomas Rew (Somerset) are also in the running for the wicketkeeping position currently held by Surrey’s Jamie Smith.
