Suryakumar Yadav denies ICC charges after PCB complaint on Pahalgam attack remarks post India-Pakistan Asia Cup.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav has pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the International Cricket Council after the Pakistan Cricket Board complained against him to the world body, after he brought up the Pahalgam attack context during the post-match presentation after India’s group stage clash against Pakistan.
Suryakumar dedicated India’s seven-wicket Asia Cup victory over Pakistan to the ‘bravery’ of India’s armed forces, stating that the side ‘stood with the families of the Pahalgam attack victims’. The verdict is expected on Friday.
BCCI complained about on-field gestures by Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan and pacer Haris Rauf during the September 21 clash.
The matter has been sent to match referee Andy Pycroft, with hearings for the Pakistan cricketers scheduled for Friday, a day after their match against Bangladesh.
Pycroft officiated when India, following team policy, avoided shaking hands with Pakistan after their Asia Cup clash.
Pycroft became embroiled in the controversy after Suryakumar skipped the customary handshake at the toss.
On Sunday, Farhan celebrated his fifty in the Super 4s with a ‘gun gesture’ using his bat, while Rauf was spotted signalling to fans from the boundary.
Rauf was involved in a verbal exchange with India vice-captain Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma as well.
“Surya informed the ICC hearing panel that he pleads not guilty and he has not made any statement that is against the rules. The verdict will come tomorrow,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
These Asia Cup encounters mark the first India-Pakistan clashes since the Pahalgam terror attack in April.
After the incident, India launched Operation Sindoor against targets in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in May, prompting three days of reciprocal strikes before a ceasefire was agreed.
In both their Asia Cup games, skippers Suryakumar Yadav and Salman Agha refrained from shaking hands before the toss.
“Perfect occasion, taking the time out, we stand by the victims of the families of the Pahalgam terror attack. We express our solidarity. Want to dedicate the win to all our armed forces who showed a lot of bravery,” Suryakumar had said.
