Shardul Thakur named Mumbai captain for Ranji Trophy after Ajinkya Rahane stepped down last month. Yashasvi Jaiswal excluded from squad.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Friday announced the probable squad for the upcoming Ranji Trophy. Senior all-rounder Shardul Thakur has been named the captain after Ajinkya Rahane relinquished his post earlier this year.

Thakur has taken 302 wickets in 97 first-class matches, with best figures of 7/61 against South Africa in 2021. With the bat, he has scored 2,688 runs, including two hundreds and a top score of 119.

“Shardul as the new Mumbai captain was a unanimous choice. He attended the selection committee meeting today and is very excited and keen to take on the added responsibility,” Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Abhay Hadap was quoted as saying by The Times Of India.

Mumbai Probable Selected For Ranji Trophy

Shardul Thakur (Captain), Ayush Mhatre, Musheer Khan, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Akhil Herwadkar, Ajinkya Rahane, Sarfaraz Khan, Siddhesh Lad, Suved Parkar, Suryansh Shedge. Akash Parkar, Tushar Deshpande, Sylvester Dsouza, Irfan Umair, Roystan Dias, Pratik Mishra, Akash Anand (WK), Hardik Tamore (WK), Prasad Pawar (WK), Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Himanshu Singh, Atharva Ankolekar, Ishan Mulchandani.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Excluded

Young opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal couldn’t find a spot in the list of 24 probables. Earlier in May, the 23-year-old made a U-turn, requesting MCA to let him continue with Mumbai. He was planning to move to Goa and play for the state, but ultimately, changed his plans.

Jaiswal has been representing Mumbai since his Under-19 days. He made his first-class debut for Mumbai in 2019 and has since played ten first-class games for them, scoring 863 runs at an average of 53.93.

Rahane Steps Down as Mumbai Captain

Rahane stepped down from the role of Mumbai captain last month, emphasizing the importance of grooming a new leader.

The 37-year-old, with 14,000 runs in 201 first-class matches, will continue to play as a batter for the team. Under his captaincy, Mumbai secured the Ranji Trophy title in the 2023–24 season by defeating Vidarbha in the final. He also led the team to victory in the Irani Cup 2024–25, overcoming the Rest of India (ROI) side.

The Ranji season starts on October 15, with Mumbai facing Jammu and Kashmir in their opening game.
